Event Description

Mr.  Gonzalo Menendez Guerra will give a talk on contemporary African-Cuban arts and the changes they have undergone since the Cuban revolution on Thursday, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Center Theater.

Mr.  Menendez Guerra is an Afro-Cuban artist who has dedicated himself to the Plastic Arts since the tender age of 10.  Teaching himself how to paint and draw, he achieved the rare distinction of winning various prestigious awards at national and international children’s paintings competitions.  These include: the “Primer Premio del Primer Salon De Pintura Infantil” (1974), the “Medalla de Plata, Concurso de Pintura SHANKAR de la INDIA” (1974), the “Medalla de Plata, Concurso de Pintura SHANKAR de la INDIA” ( 1976), and the “Medalla de Oro, Tercer Concurso de Pintura Infantil y Juvenil de FINLANDIA” (1976).

His experience as a self-taught Afro-Cuban artist and a teenaged winner of numerous prestigious awards and his work as illustrator for Dr. Raouf Mama’s Tropical Tales will enrich and enlighten students, faculty, and the general public throughout Connecticut.
